Just got back from a horrific dress rehersal for the Revolutionary War Play at school. The question in my mind: Should I cancel the play?
All those hours of work erased?
Or the embarassment of unprepared and flippant students in front of the principal?
We did not even make it all the way through the play before 1) I had to stop them because it was a train wreck, and 2) we ran out of time because they were goofing off (or as one of the students apologetically said; "frolicking." -- The kid doesn't understand 75% of what I say, and yet he whips out the word "frolicking.") The students were downright sheepish at the end of the rehersal, and I said what I had been thinking from the second minute they stepped on stage for the night, "Do I need to cancel this?"
"What will happen to our midterm grade, teacher?" (They opted for this midterm project instead of a midterm test).
"You'll get a zero. Consider this test day. If you came this prepared to take a test, what grade do you think you would get?"
They all nod remorsefully, "We'll do better tomorrow, Miss Buckelee... We're sorry."
That's a risky gamble to make the night before a performance.
