The Paycheck

So since I got here I have been looking for a job on campus so that I would be able to pay for my living expenses. After three weeks of searching, nothing. Finally I was contacted by a family living about a mile and a half away that said they wanted someone to walk their dog for them every day while they are at work. Decent pay, five days a week, an hour a day, cash every week... and nothing else had turned up... I'm not sure that I had any dignity still intact after working at McDonalds for two years in high school, but whatever was left, I threw to the wind and took the dog walking job as a college student.
'Sigh'... So I have been walking this golden retriever - poodle mix (I believe they told me the correct name for it is a "golden doodle") every day for the last week or so in 90 degree mid-west humidity. Not exactly what I had in mind. I think I was picturing running through a field of wild flowers with a happy man's-best-friend-silky-golden retriever, not tugging on the leash of a whitish-hoo-hair puppy that looks like Einstein and sweating my brains out in a outside greenhouse... But, the day came - there was HOPE!
Hanging out at the college's cafe/restaraunt with some friends, I spotted a sign that said they were hiring. This is the coveted place to work on campus. Great food, see your friends, on campus, flexible hours... and did I mention? GREAT FOOD. I decided to apply. Knowing that another one of my friends was looking for a job as well, I went, found him, and showed him the poster. As we stood there considering the possiblities, one of the employees walked up and started talking to us about the job. Long story short (I know, too late) he was hired on the spot and I am stuck walking a dog. Man, that is what I get for being nice and trying to help someone else out! :)
So I was thinking about this whole situation and realizing that if their is one reason that I would fail at college (which I absolutely refuse to do), it would be because I lack the killer instinct. "Every man for himself!" "Survival of the fittest!" "Go to the matresses!" Its a jungle out here, these are the lessons I need to be learning... :)
